Update #2: Upcoming School Year

Submitted by Gurmat on

Our team is back at Gurmat Center and is working hard with the guidance of BC health authorities to prepare for the safe return of students, volunteers, and staff in September! We thank you for your patience and understanding.

2020 - 2021 SCHOOL YEAR

We are very excited for classes to start up in September. We will be looking to see what the School District of Abbotsford will be doing this September as well. Starting classes in September will allow students to remain connected to a positive learning environment, their Punjabi and Sikhi education, and prevent learning loss.

Details regarding the upcoming school year are listed below:
  • Registration will open in the first week of August
  • Classes will begin on Monday, September 21, 2020
  • Limited seating: Since class sizes have been greatly reduced due to physical distancing, spaces are very limited. As a result, registration will happen on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • To ensure that Gurmat Center is a safe environment for our students, staff, volunteers, and families:
    • Class sizes have been significantly reduced
    • Students in all classes will be seated 6 feet apart from other students and teaching staff
    • Volunteer positions have been limited
    • Little Gursikhs Sangat has been cancelled
    • Students, volunteers, and staff will be provided with hand sanitizer and other necessary supplies
    • We will be increasing the frequency of cleaning on high touch surfaces, classrooms and the office
    • Strict policies and procedures around physical distancing, visitors, and more will be implemented for students, volunteers, and staff
    • Students, volunteers and staff will be required to complete Daily Health Assessments online (prior to arriving in class)
Specific details for each class/department (including time and day of class) will be included in the next email, scheduled to be sent in the first week of August.

GURMAT CENTER RECYCLING PROGRAM (GCR)

Though families are unable to drop off their recyclables at Gurmat Center, donation is still possible! All recycling depots can accept your recyclables as donations to Gurmat Center. The process is 2 simple steps:
  1. At the recycling depot, punch in Gurmat Center's phone number on the screen: 604-855-0020
  2. Paste the printed sticker on your recycling bags
  • Recycling bags must be clear (white or blue)
  • 6 bags can be donated per day (per family)
  • No alcohol bottles, soap/detergent jugs, or milk jugs/bottles (regular, almond, soy, etc.)
  • Please note that stickers will be printed in the following name: Sant Baba Vasakha Singh Sikh Society
  • Staff will sort your recycling

SUMMER READING PROGRAM

To ensure that students do not fall behind in their classes, we request families to support their children through the Summer Reading Program. The resources for this program can be found in the students' workbooks/binders. Students must continue to review class material until classes restart.

The Summer Reading Program has been established in order to prevent learning loss over the summer holidays. Given the additional two months that students have not been in class, it is critical that students participate in this program in order to avoid being sent back to their previous class/level.

Please note that teachers reserve the right to send students back to their previous class/level if the student did not complete their summer reading or if they are unable to keep up with their new level.
